There’s a final installment that came years later, Mercy Kill, which takes place after the Legacy of the Force series (see below), so some additional reading might be needed for context. Aaron Allston’s entries follow another unit that’s geared more toward espionage, and they’re sidesplittingly funny. The series follows the efforts of the New Republic as it takes on the Empire in the years after Return of the Jedi, and if you like military science fiction, there’s plenty to love here: there’s lots of X-Wing fighter dogfights, espionage, and a whole cast of great new characters. Based on the old PC games, this series takes an interesting direction: Stackpole only sparingly uses the franchise’s lead characters, and introduces a whole host of his own. ![]() ![]() ![]() Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. The ‘found family’ trope is something I really love in any story and it’s a real theme in this series. The residents of the Deucalion are an interesting lot, I won’t go into each one individually but Fenestra in particular is a wonderful character, again there is so much more than meets the eye and you can tell they love Morrigan and Jupiter. Squall was a joyous child and seemed to love his friend. Jupiter North is so mysterious, but it never comes across as him not being developed, he’s vague and is careful not to give too much away. History of Wundersmith is hidden from the public, and there is a lot of propaganda against Wundersmith in general in Nevermoor, not just against Squall, even though other Wundersmiths were presumably killed by trying to stop him. ![]() ![]() Hawthorn, Morrigan’s best friend, is such a cheeky boy, loves a joke, but genuinely cares about Morrigan, and their friendship is so pure. She just wants a family, to be loved and to be accepted. We understand why she does the things she does, she’s a scared little girl who’s confidence grows, and she never feels older than the age she’s supposed to be like can happen in some younger books. Morrigan is the most developed character I would say but as she is the main character that’s what I would expect. I love the characters in both Nevermoor and Wundersmith. ![]() ![]() ![]() " Wuthering Heights is a strange sort of book - baffling all regular criticism yet, it is impossible to begin and not finish it and quite as impossible to lay it aside afterwards and say nothing about it." This review, from Douglas Jerrold's Weekly Newspaper, was one of the first receptions to Emily Brontë's novel, and concluded with the line, "we must leave it to our readers to decide what sort of a book it is." The conclusion in this review, which is the extent of praise the novel received on its publication, pertains not only to the novel Wuthering Heights but to Emily Brontë herself it is up to readers to determine what type of writer Brontë was: Besides Wuthering Heights, only a few poems of hers exist and precious little of her personal history exists to complement those writings. ![]() |
